We can all agree that dogs are humans’ best friends. Dogs give you unwavering love, loyalty and not to mention a huge ball of cuteness. Most (do I dare say all) dog owners can agree that they love their dog like their own child. It’s safe to say that if it’s possible you would love to have your doggo in your upcoming engagement photo.
Engagement props don’t have to be lame and outdated. Bring along your fur baby is a great way to add something unique, personal, and reflect your current lifestyle.
It takes a little bit of planning to have your dog included in your engagement photo, BUT! it is so worth it. here are five tips to make the process seamless.
1. Bring Treats + Toys
Being the owner you know best. You know if they are easily distracted, hyper around new people, anxious, super friendly or easy-going. Being prepared for the shoot and adopting to your dog’s needs. It’s good to come prepared with treats and toys (don’t forget the pop bag) to entertain your doggo during the shoot.
Coming prepared will help transition your dog in with another human and allows you to play with your dog in a natural and genuine way.
2. Go someplace familiar
This really depends on your dog’s personality. Some dogs get easily anxious while some are super outgoing and adventurist. Going to a location that your dog is familiar with will help her/him feel comfortable.
This doesn’t mean you can’t pick the spot you like. You can bring your dog to that area a few times just to get them comfortable. Be aware of “No Dogs on Trail” signs and be respectful of this. There are good reasons they are put in place, a lot of the natural eco-system are being preserved and by breaking this rule you are possibly contributing to ruining the eco-system of the preserved area.

Make sure to choose a place that is not too crowded. Its safe to say that your dog “is the cutest dog a live” and whos to say strangers wouldn’t want to come up to you to ask to pet your doggo. By picking a less crowded space your dog won’t be distracted by strangers asking for pets.
3. Ask a friend/family or dog sitter to come along
We most likely will only be taking photos with your fur baby for tops 20 minutes. It helps to have another person to take over and watch over your dog while you continue to take engagement portraits with just you and your partner.
Its a win, win situation. You won’t have to watch after your dog the entire time and your dog also isn’t bored just sitting in one place for the rest of the photoshoot. Having someone else to walk your dog or play with your pet just makes the whole experience less stressful and fun for both humans and pets.
4. Get your dog groomed a few days before the engagement photo
Who said your the only that needs to look good for your engagement session. If you are planning to bring your dog along this is a great chance to get him/her groomed and looking his/her best for the photoshoot. Obviously not a requirement, but something to think about.
I’ve had a few clients buy a custom made bandana or a new accessory.
5. Hire the a dog friendly photographer
Last but surely not least, make sure you hire a photographer that can get the job done. Some photographers might be uncomfortable with dogs or even allergic. It’s best to inquire ahead of time if you are planning to include your fur baby in your engagement photos.

PSSSTTT! This applies to your other fur babies. I don’t have a dog (yet) myself! but I have two rescue cats that are very much a part of my family and life. We dont discriminate here in Mary Calotes Photograhy. (no allergies here!) Might your fur baby be a ferrit, bunnie, cat, etc… you are more than welcome to include them in your photoshoot
