Did you just get engaged? Are you searching high and low for the right photos? Look no more! Here are six tips to guide you to your dream wedding photos!
1. WHAT’S YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS VISION? (aka wedding goals)
There are a lot of photographers (believe me I know) and it can get uberwhelming! That’s why you are reading this, in hopes to narrow down the process.
Way before you start researching and going cray on Pinterest, sit down, grab a drink, don’t forget to include your partner and write down how you envision your wedding day, make a list of what you do and or don’t want. It makes making decision later on so much easier.
Great questions to ask when planning your wedding:
- do we want a big wedding or an intimate one? approximately how many people are we planning to invite?
- is it an outdoor or indoor wedding?
- how much are we willing to spend? (more about this on the next tip)
- what month/ Season would we want it to be?
- how do you want to remember your wedding 10, 20, 50 years from now?
- what are the top 3 – 5 vendors that are important to both of you?
If you’re not sure, I always recommend sitting down together and making a Pinterest board. You can check my wedding photos Pinterest board here to get some ideas!
2. MONEY MONEY MONEY – WHAT’S YOUR BUDGET for wedding photos?
I get it – money doesn’t fall from trees. So before we dive in deep, let’s talk about money. A photographer is one of the biggest investments during a wedding, so before jumping into any wedding decision, know your budget. Things can add up quickly! Next thing you know, you’re way over your head. It is imperative you know how much you can spend before you start looking for vendors.
You will notice that some photographers cost more than others – some costs are travel fees and taxes.
It all comes down to this….. you get what you pay for.
WEDDING PLANNING TIP: check the photographer’s website – they will usually have the starting price of their wedding photos.
3. WHAT’S YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE?
What kind of photos do you want out of your wedding day? Editorial, Candid, Documentary… etc…
Is your weddings outdoors? Is it indoors? In a church, backyard, beach? On a mountain top?
Pick a photographer that understands your wants and needs. There are tons of photographers that specialize in a specific type of wedding. If you are a classy type of bride leaning more on the traditional type of wedding, I encourage you to pick someone that specializes in capturing this type & style of wedding.
Vice Versa – if you are less traditional and would rather elope on a mountain top or the beach, hire a photographer that specializes in adventurous weddings.
Pick a photographer that fits your style and values.
Each photographer will lean to a certain style and it will benefit you a lot if you get someone that specializes in the type of wedding you are having.
4. WHAT’S YOUR PERSONALITY?
You’re probably wondering, “why does this matter?”
I’ll tell you. Your photographer is your storyteller. Through their eyes and lens, they’ll tell your story as your day unfolds. You’ll have those memories 10, 20 or 60 years from now.
I really believe that a photographer is not just another vendor. I personally make it a goal to convert my clients into friends.
My personality is definitely a part of the package. I want someone to hire me not just because of how I capture moments but also for the experience that I will be providing them.
I can’t stress this enough! Before you put the cash down for wedding photos, get to know your photographer and see if you guys are a great fit.
You will enjoy your photos and wedding more if you and your vendors see eye to eye.
5. WHAT STYLE OF EDITING DO YOU PREFER?
THIS IS A BIG DEAL!!! (did you see me use all caps) BUT FOR REAL.
There are so many times that people just pick someone that another bride, friend, or co-worker recommended to them, without a second thought and ZERO research.
NEVER! Just book someone without seeing their portfolio?! Please!!!
Find out what kind of photos draw you in – is it bright and airy? moody? warm? film like? edgy? artsy?
Your final product will drastically change by how a photographer edits a photo. So make sure you do your research beforehand.
6. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST – DO YOUR RESEARCH!
I know that last one isn’t a question.
You already started off on the right foot by reading this blog. Research can take a lot of time and be a little frustrating but it’ll pay off in the end.
- Reach out to friends that recently got married,
- check out social media such as instagram #(your location/wedding location)weddingphotographer,
- and local Facebook group for brides in your area.
I hope that this guide gave you a little more knowledge and confidence in picking the right photographer for your wedding day! Good luck and congratulations on your big day. I am so excited for you!!! WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST!!
